Aromatic plant therapy has been widely used in the auxiliary treatment of human diseases. Correspondingly，it can be applied to pet dogs and cats，and further research is required to determine its true effects. By collecting research papers and case reports，this paper studied the development of aromatherapy，major active components of aromatic plants，the mechanism of function，and the application and prospects of aromatherapy in pet cats and dogs. Chemical composition and intake route of aromatic essential oil was explored. Categorized effects of aromatherapy and precautions of use were also included and analyzed through case studies. Collectively，the current review provides a reference for the development and application of aromatherapy in the pet industry in our country.
